I’m writing this from my hotel room in Chicago where I’m attending the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) annual global conference. Although attendance is down from last year, as in most industry conferences in 2009, there are attendees from over 40 countries. The theme of this year’s event is “Ideas, Tools and Results” and as Rick Blasgen, President and CEO of CSCMP said in his opening address, …”innovation, collabora

Shipping errors not only lead to customer dissatisfaction, they can also significantly impact a company's bottom line. At best, the results are increased labor and shipping costs for the manufacturer or retailer, which at times can be very significant. In a worst case scenario, this could result in losing a customer's current and future business. This is why it is increasingly important for supply chain companies to monitor and achieve a high percentage of accuracy in shipping orders.

I sat in on a great webinar yesterday, “Understanding the Value of Collaborative Solutions”, an IBM webcast which was co-sponsored by The Hackett Group, a global strategic advisory firm.
The Hackett Group reported on an independent study conducted in Q1 2009, among a selected sample of mid-market users (< $1 billion in annual revenue) on collaborative technologies. “The study's objective was to gain insight into the level of adoption of

Collaboration in the supply chain continues to be a hot topic, but it’s very difficult to find quantifiable examples and case studies documenting the value achieved from collaboration. I came upon a great example this week on Purchasing.com of the success achieved by BASF Coatings North America and Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) in an accelerated paint line con

It's hard to believe that we're halfway through 2009 and still waiting for the US economy to rebound. As President Obama and the Congress continue to debate the best way forward, most business executives are working five times harder to keep their current customers satisfied and win new business. Some are so buried in their day-to-day activities and concerns about surviving that they are hesitant to take on anything new that isn't "mission critical" to the enterprise. Although this is understand…

Collaboration is a hot topic for many businesses today, especially in the supply chain industry. Some of the key factors that are creating this are the impact of globalization, shorter product life cycles, drastic swings in oil prices, the complexities of managing the storage and movement of goods and the ever increasing capabilities of technology.
Effective collaboration can increase customer satisfaction and profitability for businesses by significantly improving the order to cash process (cu…

One of the hottest subjects in the supply chain industry today is Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP), the process by which companies bring together all of their functional business plans on a regularly-scheduled basis and integrate them into one tactical plan. The overall objective of S&OP is to develop a singular plan for the company which aligns all the functional teams to meet the needs of their customers, at the least cost.
There are a number of experts in the supply chain industr…

Controlling expenses and minimizing “unnecessary” investments are what executives tend to look at in tough economic times. This usually makes good business sense in the short term but may not be a winning strategy for the long term.
Investing in radio-frequency (RF) barcoding is one of the best investments manufacturing, warehouse and distribution companies can make. Real-time barode scanning enables companies to significantly reduce costs associated with labor, shipping errors and shrinkage, m…

At its core, Web 2.0 empowers users to generate content, connect people to each other and connect people to the content they are looking for.
Supply Chain Management 2.0 (SCM 2.0) refers to the combination of processes, methodologies, tools and delivery options companies utilize for rapid results and the agility to manage change. The latter is of great importance due to the impact of globalization, drastic swings in oil prices, shorter product life cycles, scarcity of talent and the compl…

In working with numerous manufacturing, warehousing and logisitcs companies over the years, it continues to amaze me how many have not yet implemented RF (radio frequency) barcode scanning to manage the flow of material from Receiving of inventory all the way through the Shipping of orders. If you asked the executives of these companies if they were automated, all would say that they have computer systems in place. This is true, but when you really look at their operational processes, too much i…

According to a recent study sponsored by Verizon and Microsoft ("Impact of Collaboration on Business Performance" by Frost & Sullivan, 2007), Collaboration is now recognized as a key driver of overall companies around the world. In a world of increasing uncertainty and volatility, tracking the flow of goods from origin to destination is more challenging than ever before. After years of developing offshore manufacturing centers in Asia, as the costs of oil have increased, many American companies are rethinking where manufacturing should take place and the most cost-effective means of warehousing and transporting products to their customers.
Getting the right goods to the right place at the right time is no easy challeng…

The simultaneous growth of the internet and global trade has created tremendous opportunities for businesses, but also significant challenges in managing the flow of goods throughout the supply chain. Supply chain management involves the movement and storage of raw material, inventory and finished goods from the point of production to the point of consumption. Depending on the specific industry, effective management of supply chain costs can have a profound impact on a company’s bottom line and…

I had an amazing opportunity a few months ago to visit the Maher Terminals, located in Port Elizabeth, NJ, the largest container terminal operator in the Port of New York and New Jersey. The New York-New Jersey seaport is the biggest on the east coast and the nations third largest, behind Los Angeles and Long Beach, California. In 2007 the seaport handled over $100 billion worth of imports and $38 billion worth of exports.
Maher Terminals comprise 600 operating acres, supports 17 ocean carrier…
